commonly available brands: Type B Handle (X-acto) K2 Handle (Excel) #2 Handle (Huron) Demystifying blade quality: Substantially all branded blades utilize either T10
or SK5 grades of steel. If blade quality (which primarily is suggestive
of how long a blade can be expected to keep its edge, and thus how often you'll
need to replace it) factors into your buying decision, you may wish to
investigate the type of steel used before making your blade purchase. In
addition, the quality of the blade manufacturing process also varies from
factory to factory. Unfortunately there's no easy industry-standard
method of quantifying and presenting such manufacturing process quality
differences, so in this respect, it's "buyer beware". Our
blades use T10 steel, are manufactured in the same factories and on the same
production lines as many branded blades sold nationally, and in fact, are
generally identical in every respect other than packaging to much of the
branded product widely sold through bricks-and-mortar hobby stores. Demystifying blade / knife handle compatibility: Generally speaking, light duty blades (those with 1/4" shanks) should be paired with light duty knife handles; medium duty blades (the majority of those with 3/8" shanks) should be paired with medium duty handles, and the larger blades (such as #26 whittling blades, pull/razor saws, and certain other specialty use items, most of which also have 3/8" shanks) should be used with heavy duty knife handles. The blade shank is the squared off part of the blade that slots into the knife handle. It's physically possible to fit 1/4" shank into 3/8" collet, but it's not recommended. Because light duty blades are mostly shorter than medium duty blades, the cutting edge of light duty blades may feel unnaturally close to the thicker collet of a medium duty handle. And it's not possible at all to fit a 3/8" shank into a 1/4" handle.
